BPCE wins in France

The Banker Award recognises Groupe BPCE's economic and commercial performance, financial strength and achievements in innovation and digital sectors (Apple Pay etc.). The bank's solvency was significantly strengthened in 2015 and the Common Equity Tier 1 ratio was 13.0% on January 1, 2016. Marguerite Bérard-Andrieu, Chief Executive Officer, Group Finance, Strategy, Legal Affairs, and Group Company Secretary attended the award ceremony in London last night.

The Banker (Financial Times Group) is an internationally recognised banking magazine, read in over 180 countries. The magazine includes a unique database of 4,000 bank profiles, including their financial strength, profitability and performance relative to the competition.

Groupe BPCE said in a press release that its success demonstrates the commitment of its 108,000 employees, subsidiaries, two prominent retail banking networks – Banque Populaire and Caisse d'Epargne – and Natixis to serving their 35 million clients.

CaixaBank awarded best in Spain

CaixaBank won high honours in the Spain category. In its press release announcing the win, CaixaBank said: "Resilience, Solvency and Leadership in the financial markets are the three qualities that The Banker quoted to explain why Caixabank was awarded 'Bank of the Year 2016' in Spain."

In the release, Caixabank said that it is the main bank for one in four Spaniards, with a 25.7% penetration rate in households. It also noted its leadership position in the insurance market, with 23.9% market share in savings products linked to insurances, 18.4% in life insurances and 27.9% in health insurance. It also has leadership in investment funds via Caixabank Asset Management at 18.1% market share.

They note their constant pursuit of innovation, such as the launching of ImanginBank in January 2016. Caixabank is a leader in mobile banking with 3.1 million clients and in online banking with 5.1 million clients. They also said that they are a bank with an important social dimension too, as its Microbank is the only bank in Spain dedicated exclusively to microcredits.

They note that the award shows that Caixabank is among the best banks in the world. With 150 institutions from all countries of the world participateing in this contest, winners are those banks that can cope in a significant way with the challenges  of the sector such as regulation, the economic crisis and low interest rates.

This award adds to the other laurels received by Caixabank this year such as Best Bank in Spain by Global Finance, the EFMA and Accenture Prize that goes to the most innovative bank in the world as well as retail banker of the year.
