The following text is a message from WSBI-ESBG on Tuesday's bombings in Brussels Zaventem Airport and Brussels Metro.
BRUSSELS, 22 March 2016
Tuesday's tragic events remind us how fragile and hard-earned are the peace, security and prosperity of the world in which we live.
The bloodshed in Brussels is an attack on civilized society and the European project. Whatever challenges we face from those that seek to end decades of social and economic progress we must remain steadfast. The peoples of Europe will continue to advance, and will not fall back to the darkness that clouds our history.
Any attack is an affront to the vision laid out by Messrs. Spaak, Monnet, Schumann, Adenauer, Churchill, among others. We have invested too much, for too long, to let this outrage thwart ideals that keep Europe strong and together.
Our thoughts are of those killed and injured, and our compassion with their families and friends. We join the entire Brussels community which is affected by today's tragic events in sorrowful shock.
We will remain vigilant, keeping aware of local events as they unfold, following local authority instructions, and monitoring local media for further developments. Appropriate steps remain in place to bolster personal security of all who engage with WSBI-ESBG – staff, members and stakeholders alike.
