Staying at the forefront of need, savings and retail banks are reinventing their role in a competitive, more digital banking landscape. Whether in person, online or mobile, the local bank model focuses on people, on servicing communities and on boosting the small and medium-sized businesses that form the bedrock of the real economy. Savings and retail banks are committed to pioneering foundation work, investing more than €1 billion in projects in Europe that tackle social problems in areas such as promoting health and well-being, preserving cultural heritage and financial education – programmes that help improve the lives of Europeans every day. It’s part of savings and retail banks’ self-help roots. To make this banking model continue to thrive, policymakers should consider a tier-based, proportionate approach for EU rules that can help this close-to-customer model blossom in the 21st century.
