Politico LIVE
Europe’s economy is heading into troubled waters. Inflationary pressure, driven by the most acute economic circumstances since 2008, has put policymakers in the hot seat to steady the course. On top of this, leaders across Europe have been tasked with running a tight ship – finishing up on key finance policy files and keeping up with a disrupting FinTech economy. What will 2023 look like once the storm has settled?
POLITICO Live’s Finance Summit on March 23 will peek into the telescope to see what’s next for the finance sector, and what role it will play in driving tomorrow’s economy. A much-needed status update of Europe’s economic situation will kick off the day, followed by in-depth discussions on banking, green finance and more, topped off by compelling discussions on crypto and payments.
Finance Summit: Mr Peter Simon, the Managing Director of WSBI-ESGB is speaking at: Spotlight discussion - Basel III and the road to the Banking Union: almost there?

ESBG Spotlight: European Payments – taking Stock of current developments
In the Spotlight: Dr. Joachim Schmalzl, Executive Member of the Board of DSGV
In 2021, nearly 144 billion cashless transactions were made in the EU at an 8,6% CAGR (2017-2021), showing that payments are extremely important – and for the EU regulators it is important that these payments are safe, secure, efficient and under EU governance.
This is the right moment to take stock of the latest developments and whether the recent European Commission initiatives are assisting the EU payments landscape to flourish. ESBG is happy to put Dr. Schmalzl, Executive Member of the Board of DSGV, in its Spotlight to receive an update on recent developments. He will shed some light on general market trends in payments, customer behaviour, fraud and the digital euro, and he will discuss some recent regulatory initiatives.
Moderated by Diederik Bruggink, ESBG’s Head of the Payments, Digital Finance and Innovation department, this event promises to be a fruitful exchange on some of the recent developments that drive the EU’s payments agenda.

The 28th African Regional Group Meeting convenes in Cape Verde
Representing 27 financial institutions from 20 countries, WSBI Africa Regional Group convened in Cape Verde during 6-7 October 2022.
By Stephanie Yeze
Co-organized by WSBI and Caixa Económica de Cabo Verde, the Africa Regional Group came together physically for the first time since the last in-person meeting that was held in Zimbabwe back in 2019 during the 28th edition of these meeting series. As one of the long-lasting regional groups of WSBI, Africa Regional Group brings together members in the African region to keep close exchange on the members’ priority topics of the year.
This year’s meeting focused on “Banking Development Strategy & Leadership” and saw the active participation of more than 30 delegates from such countries as South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Morocco, Senegal and of course from the hosting country Cape Verde.
Following the welcoming speeches made by Mr. Antonio Moreira, CEO of CAIXA Económica de Cabo Verde, Mr. El Moussaoui M’hamed, Al Barid Bank President and also the newly named WSBI Africa Regional Group President, and Mr. Peter Simon, Managing Director of WSBI-ESBG, the two days event was officially inaugurated by H.E. Mr. Carlos Santos, Minister of the Cape Verde Government. During his speech, Mr. Santos highlighted that the 28th Strategic African Regional Group Meeting would allow participants to discuss relevant themes for the institutional developments, the banking development strategy activities and leadership as well as providing them with an analysis on the new trends for the banking sectors globally and at the level at the regional group.
The first day started with a panel on process ‘from postal financial services to retail bank’. During the panel, representatives from Al Barid Bank Morocco, Tanzania Commercial Bank and Central Bank of Cape Verde, were able to discuss the different angles and solutions to facilitate the process. On the second session, MicroBank, which is the social bank of the CaixaBank Group, made a presentation with a focus on inclusion through microcredit and other financing with social impact. During the panel, the participants were briefed on how the network of branches has adapted their financial products and services to the needs of not only entrepreneurs, microenterprises and also families in order to promote personal development, social progress and financial inclusion before and after the pandemic. The following session on “Developing MSME Growth in Africa” elaborated on the findings of the SOI 2022 report which examines the role of WSBI members in driving MSME growth in Africa. Finally, the last panel of the day put the emphasis on “Leadership and Change Management”. By working together, the whole audience was able to reflect on their own individual leadership and willingness to be open to a potential change of leading.

Payment Fintech:Quo Vadis?
ESBG Spotlight 6 December 2022 – Jan Vermeulen (NBB), Payment Fintech: Quo Vadis?
It seems that most Fintech companies target payments as the holy grail for their business. Since PSD2 has brought the opportunity for those Fintech companies to become licensed to operate in payments, the number of FinTech companies as well as the granted licenses showed impressive growth. But is it all gold that glitters?
Now that the review of PSD2 is taking place, Jan Vermeulen, directly overseeing the Belgium-based licensed FinTech companies at the National Bank of Belgium, will take stock on whether that is the case or not.
During this ESBG Spotlight, he will provide insight in the developments in the Belgium Fintech space since PSD2 became into force.

Jan Vermeulen is the Coordinator Retail payments, prudential supervision and oversight at the National Bank of Belgium.
This session will be moderated by Diederik Bruggink, Head of Payments and Innovation at the European Savings and retail Banking Group (ESBG).

Promoting financial education among women and highlighting the need to focus a few more efforts in improving female financial literacy. This is the aim of the upcoming ESBG event “My World, My Knowledge, My Future: A Female Approach To Financial Education”.
Studies show that women are less likely to be financially literate than men – especially when it comes to investing. Men are statistically more likely to take risks, but also research their activities and understand what they are doing. A basis in financial education is key to our future success in saving, investing, and growing wealth in a safe environment – calculating the risk and understanding what could go wrong, or right.
Empowering consumers – in particular women, who are less engaged than men – with the knowledge to make sound financial decisions and build a better future is important in an era of low savings rates, pandemic recovery and an ever-changing digital world. Every day we find new challenges and face new risks, and we need to be armed with up-to-date information and simple knowledge how to navigate through the financial world.
Join us and be part of a pivotal debate on topics like :
• How can financial institutions raise awareness among women of the risks and responsibilities when investing?
• What can school curricula do to engage more girls in money topics?
• Where can financial institutions improve their financial education plans to appeal to a female audience?
• What can policy makers do to provide support when targeting this group?

What are their differences and what do they depend on?Which of the parties – the financial institutions or the client – should act as a motivator in the creation and offer of ESG products?

Inclusive: How are organizations designing inclusive business models that cater to the needs of the unbanked and underbanked?
