Global Money Week 2016: activities round-up

ESBG members took part in events that provide children knowledge on money, saving, creating livelihoods

​WSBI is proud to be a part of Global Money Week (GMW), an annual money awareness celebration organised by Child and Youth Finance International (CYFI) [1]. Held each March, the week-long celebration aims at providing children and youth with knowledge concerning money, saving, creating livelihoods, financial inclusion, and entrepreneurship in order to help them adopt a responsible attitude towards money. There were several events organised by different actors such as banks, non-governmental organisations, educational institutions, governments, universities and civil society.

Each year WSBI, as a partner of CYFI, encourages its members to take part in the celebration. The GMW in 2016 was dedicated to the theme Take Part. Save Smart! and aimed to teach children and youth worldwide about the importance of saving for the future through exciting activities and interactive events.

Some of the projects organised by WSBI members this year included:


Erste Group Bank AG and Erste Financial Life Park (FLiP), 15-20 March 2016

I €AN Workshops were organised at the initiative of Zweite Sparkasse in cooperation with Schuldnerberatung Wien and the apprentice workshops of Jugend am Werk (a non-profit association that offers young apprentices, who are unable to find an apprenticeship vocational training). The workshop was for young people between 16 and 19 who are paid their first apprenticeship compensation. 

They were given the opportunity to explore their personal relationship with money and develop a sense of responsibility in their use of money. Furthermore, the workshops covered financial hazards and the consequences of debt as well as the development of personal and practicable money management strategies. The aim was to develop skills and confidence in financial matters.


"Starte dein Projekt" Workshops is a crowd funding-platform, designed to help students of vocational schools in Austria. This initiative is financed by donations and is a joint-project of Erste Bank and Sparkassen, the Initiative of Teaching Entrepreneurship (IFTE) and of the Wiener Stadtschulrat (Vienna Municipal Education Authority). It enables the presentation and funding of student-projects – in short: the search for investors. It fosters not only the entrepreneurial spirit, but also with its practical and active orientation the curriculum of the students. In addition workshops for idea generation (Entrepreneurial Design Thinking) and project management (Project Playground) can be booked via Design Thinking helps with the conceptualization of a business idea and Project Playground comprises the business game "fruit salad", which helps to set course for a future project.

Banco Caja Social

Banco Caja Social participated in a regional rally together with 4 other countries from Latin America. This event was organized for children and young people between 14 and 24 years of age. By using the hashtag @BcoCajaSocial, #RallyLAC and #GMW2016 on Twitter or Facebook they could send their answers to eleven questions and could also win some prices if they were right. The game aimed to increase the knowledge on financial inclusion and financial education  for youth.

Dominican Republic

Asociación Popular de Ahorros y Préstamos, 14-20 March 2016

Asociación Popular de Ahorros y Préstamos participated in the "semana económica" organized by the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic for the third edition of Global Money Week in the country. Children and youth learned about the monetary policy in the Dominican Republic by playing interactive games and also took a guided tour of the Numismatic and Philatelic Museum. Furthermore, there were workshops, games and a theater play which aimed to teach children and youth about the importance of recognizing legitimate money and knowing the characteristics of the local currency, el peso.

Post Office Savings Bank, 1-31 March 2016

​All 104 ​Post Office Savings Bank (POSB) branches selected a school or college of their choice. They worked with the teachers to undertake some financial education sessions as well as to speak about the Postbank SMATA account for the youth. Thereafter they seeked to open accounts for the school and college students. Those who opened an account were given an opportunity to participate in a competition where the students were required to express their understanding of financial education through essays, music, arts etc. The competitions were supervised by the teachers who also marked/ranked the students and the top three students were identified and rewarded. The top students also got an opportunity to visit the branch to understand banking operations and also to benefit from mentoring by the Postbank staff. Photos of these activities have been taken and published in the Postbank magazine. This activity was taking place under the auspices of the Kenya Banking Association.

Number of youth participants during GMW: every branch reached at least 100 students and therefore a total number of over 10,000 students overall



The Luxembourg Bankers Association, 14-18 March 2016

  • ​​​​​​​"D'Woch vun de Suen"
  • Locations: classroom, Bank Museum at Banque et Caisse d' Epargne de L'Etat(BCEE), Central Bank of Luxembourg

This event helped make pupils aware of 'money' aspects. The activities proposed to the pupils (11 years) included:

  • Interventions in the classroom with focus on a responsible purchasing behaviour. The courses were animated by volunteers in collaboration with teachers. The pedagogical material was an educational workbook called "Impuls", made by Inter-Actions through its Service d'Information et de Conseil en matière de Surendettement (SICS).;
  • Playing the game "Eurodéo" in class, learning to distinguish between desires and needs and also to prioritize its expenses in a budgeting view; and
  • Visits to the Bank Museum at Banque et Caisse d' Epargne de L'Etat (BCEE) and Central Bank of Luxembourg.

During the visit of the Bank Museum, there was a small competition about the different topics shown during the visit and a draw for a beautiful porcelain piggy bank competition as a prize. The visit concluded with a picture of the group, which has been sent to the teachers.

Altogether 750 pupils  participated in the "Woch vun de Suen" and 320 visitors came to the Bank Museum at BCEE.

Bank of Valletta, 14-18 March 2016

  • Financial Literacy for School Leavers at BOV Centre
  • Tips re Financial Literacy using social media channels and

​Bank of Valetta (BOV) organised initiatives under the auspices of the Malta Bankers Association, in collaboration with the Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education. A number of sketches highlighting a number of typical scenarios involving the automated teller machine (ATM) and electronic point of sale (EPOS) were produced. These have been shown to participants to elicit discussions. They were followed by practical sessions at ATM and POS. Every session lasted 90 mins. Two groups of 12 each participated per day. In addition, a set of financial literacy tips was uploaded on the Bank's digital media channels to generate awareness among the general public. Altogether 120 persons have been involved.

Workshops "Basic Finance" for youngsters at the university (Fundación Ibercaja -Professional association of economists) & Workshop "Basic Finance for Adults", which clarified concepts related to the economy in general, and specifically the market: means of payment, budget, financial products, investment, savings and electronic banking.

Number of youth participants during GMW: 30

  • Basic finance workshop – children 10-12 years, Ejea de los Caballeros – Zaragoza & Teruel

Students went out from school to talk about the economy. In this workshop students learned concepts such as savings, money, and personal budget. Number of youth participants during GMW: 50 children per day 

  • Basic finance journey – youngsters 15-16 years old, Teruel

Students went out from school to talk about the economy. They talked about payment methods, role of banks, personal budget.

Fundación Cajasol, 14-28 March 2016

  • Funny Finance, Seville: A booth where, through games that were on the website, they familiarised the audience attending with financial concepts.

  • Is your budget in balance? (¿Te salen las cuentas?), Seville: A Financial Education workshop for elementary students in a competition format. The intention was that primary students understand some applications of mathematics that can be very useful for their ordinary life.

Number of youth participants during GMW: 215 primary students 

  • Saving steps, Seville: They worked with a computer graphics programme which aimed to launch simple and direct messages on how to save. And they sent it via social media to get the message to more people and make it attractive enough for them to want to share it.

Fundación Bancaria Unicaja, Centro de estudios universitarios EADE, 15​ March 2018​ 

Financial Education session for EADE's students. Unicaja's Financial Education Centre, Málaga: Interactive financial education session aimed at university students, during which they had the opportunity to participate by answering questions about savings and financial products through a remote control.

 ABANCA and Fundación Galicia Obra Social (Afundacion), 14-18 March 2016

Lecture: "Ready to take the leap? Financial needs in a lifetime" Cities: A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense, Vigo; Village: Silleda; 6 High Schools in Galicia  The purpose was to raise the importance of a responsible financial behaviour, especially within an increasingly uncertain framework for young people. It consisted of three main points: the evolution of the economy during these last years of the crisis and the current state of the markets, the evolution of the job market, the need to transit from employment to employability, and the requirement of a more responsible financial behaviour focused on money management, discrimination of financial products and financial planning.

CaixaBank, 14- 20 March 2017 – "la Caixa"  Foundation – eduCaixa 

Entrepreneurship Challenge / KitCaixa Economia – social networks diffusion linked to the GMW

  • ​​EduCaixa is the educational programme of "la Caixa Foundation" which promotes different initiatives related to economic and financial education. 

  • Desafío Emprende (Entrepreneurship challenge) is part of Young Entrepreneurs, a teaching programme that aims to awaken entrepreneurial abilities in 14-18 year old students, promoting personal growth and increasing their capacity for initiative. With this resource young people can observe the business world from a different perspective, discover new opportunities and roll out projects devised by themselves, in order to learn from the process and what it means to be an entrepreneur. 1300 Spanish schools and high schools are participating in this programme in the current course and they received 1000 projects from all those students, which "competed" in the "Desafío Emprende". Number of participants: 4000

  • KitCaixa Economia is an economic and financial education resource used by 81099 students in Spain (in 2015). During the GMW we promoted this resource linked to the GMW objectives. Number of participants: 1500



FUNCAS and Radio Nacional de España, 7 and 14 March 2016

  • RNE organised a radio show where the following topics have been discussed:
  • 7 March: Banking customers since childhood. The transcendence of having a bank account and how it encourages children to manage financial items.
