Small and medium-sized enterprises are the backbone of the European economy. They represent 99% of all businesses in the EU. In the past five years, they have created, based on research of the European Commission, around 85% of new jobs and provided two-thirds of the total private sector employment in the EU. SMEs are also a core client group for the savings and retail banks that are members of ESBG. Many entrepreneurs are clients at the local savings bank for years, sometimes even generations. EU regulation in the field of SME credits obviously have a very high influence on the relations of banks with their SME clients. This time ESBG Spotlight will focus on the characteristics and the challenges of SME Financing. In the driving seat for this presentation is Gerhard Huemer, an expert in the field, and Economic Policy Director at SMEunited, the specialised trade association representing European SMEs.
